In the crypt of the cathedral you will travel deep into the past with an Augmented Reality device. You will experience the eventful history of the Ghent Altarpiece as if you were there yourself. As the highlight of the tour you will be able to admire the one and only Ghent Altarpiece.

The tour is available in the following 9 languages: DU,FR,EN,DE,IT,ES,RU,JP,PT. Exception: the KIDS tour is only available in Dutch, French and English.

Based on your own knowledge on the Mystic Lamb and the cathedral, choose the 'Standard', 'Master of Detail' or 'KIDS' tour.  The tour lasts about  60 min. 

What is Augmented Reality?

AR is a technology applying a virtual holographic layer on top of the real world. Using a AR device, 3D figures appear and merge with the real environment. So unlike Virtual Reality (VR), with AR you can still see the real world around you.

History of the Ghent Altarpiece: From World War II to the present day

Learn more about the rescue of the altarpiece by the Monuments Men at the end of WWII and about the restoration of the lamb's head that would astonish the world today. 

After the first restoration phase (2013-2019), the original head of the Lamb was uncovered so that we can admire it again as van Eyck painted it.
