Saint Bavo’s cathedral Ghent

For over 1,000 years, this has been a house of prayer and Christian service where everyone is welcome.

Saint Bavo's Cathedral is accessible almost every day. The cathedral is closed to the public only on 1 January.

Altarpiece

The tumultuous history of the Ghent Altarpiece has been one of wars, fire and theft. After the Second World War, the Ghent Altarpiece returned to the Vijd chapel in Saint Bavo's Cathedral and in 1986 the polyptych moved to the Villa Chapel.

The third and final restoration phase has started May 3th 2023. The seven panels in the cathedral will be replaced by high-quality colorphotos during the restoration. The restoration of the upper register can again be witnessed by the public at the Museum of Fine Arts (MSK) Ghent.
