Eucharistic celebrations

HOLY WEEK 
AT SAINT BAVO CATHEDRAL

Palm Sunday 24 March 2024 

11 am : Palm consecration in the garden of Sint-Baafshuis (weather permitting). Palm procession to the cathedral and Eucharistic celebration with the Passion story. The Schola Cantorum provides the liturgical chants, with organist-titular Nicolas De Troyer.

Chrism Mass 27 March 2024 

7 pm : The bishop presides in concelebration with priests and deacons. He consecrates the Holy Oils and anoints the catechumens. The Schola Cantorum provides the liturgical chants, with organist-titular Nicolas De Troyer.

Maundy Thursday 28 March 2024

7 pm : The bishop presides in concelebration. The parish choir led by Dieter Van Belle will provide the liturgical chants, with organist-titular Nicolas De Troyer. The Eucharistic celebration will be followed by procession to the Altar of Rest in the upper choir and silent adoration until 10 pm.  

Good Friday 29 March 2024

8 am : Prayer of the Hours at the Altar of Rest in the upper choir 

8 pm : The bishop presides over the commemoration of the Lord's suffering and death. 

Holy Saturday 30 March 2024 

8 am : Prayer of the Hours at the Altar of Rest in the upper choir 

9 pm : The Bishop presides over the Easter Vigil in concelebration, dedicates the Paschal candles of the churches and monastery chapels of Ghent-Centre in the inner garden of Sint-Baafshuis and administers the sacrament of initiation to the catechumens. 

The parish choir, led by Dieter van Belle and cantor Andrzej Perz, will provide the liturgical chants, with organist-titular Nicolas De Troyer. 

Easter 31 March 2024

11 am : The bishop presides at pontifical high mass. The Schola Cantorum provides the liturgical chants, with organist-titular Nicolas De Troyer. 

5.30 pm :  Vespers service in the cathedral's upper choir.

Holy Saturday:

Saint-Nicolas Church10 am to 11.45 am / 2 pm to 3.45 pm

Eucharist celebration of St. Bavo's Cathedral Ghent

Eucharistic Celebrations

Saint Bavo's Cathedral is primarily a church and the bishop's church of the diocese of Ghent.

Since the construction works for the visitor center "Lam Gods Sint-Baafs" started, the daily Eucharistic celebration takes place at 11 am in St. Nicholas Church. This church is located 200 m from the cathedral. On Sundays and public holidays, services still continue in the cathedral. The chapter services (Monday and Friday) and the daily services at 8.45 am take place in the crypt of the cathedral.  Chapter services in the choir during summer period.

Opening hours

The cathedral is the main church of the parish H. Sint-Jan De Doper in Ghent-Center. Except 1th of Jan (closed) the cathedral is open from 8:30 am till 5:30 pm.

Every sunday the cathedral is open from 10:00 am for the Holy Mass at 11:00 pm. Special religious ceremonies are announced in the parish magazine (Kerk en Leven).
