Saint Bavo’s cathedral Ghent

For over 1,000 years, this has been a house of prayer and Christian service where everyone is welcome.

Saint Bavo's Cathedral is accessible almost every day. The cathedral is closed to the public only on 1 January.

The tumultuous history of the Ghent Altarpiece has been one of wars, fire and theft. After the Second World War, the Ghent Altarpiece returned to the Vijd chapel in Saint Bavo's Cathedral and in 1986 the polyptych moved to the Villa Chapel.
